Obituary

Betty Marie Sutfin, 96, of Marysville, passed peacefully, surrounded by her nieces and nephews, on Friday, July 15, 2022 at Enloe Hospital in Chico.

Betty was born to Walter Ernest and Catherine Marie Hunzeker on December 10, 1925, at the family home on Larkin Road in Gridley. She was the second of three children. Older sister, Mary Jane (Hunzeker) Nielson and younger brother, Walter Raymond (Ray) Hunzeker preceded her in death. She was the widow of the late Harold Herbert Sutfin who passed in 1994 and mother to Susan Ann (Sutfin) Ruiz who passed in December of 2021.

Betty is survived by 4 grandchildren: Cassandra, Sherry Lynn, Katarina, and Paul Paul and her son-in-law, Paul Ruiz. She is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren: Nicolas Charles, Adalyna Marie, Leonidas Victor, Kameron, Kaydin, Konnir, and Kenzie.

Betty graduated from Gridley High, class of 1943, and attended Dominican College in San Rafael, where she earned her degree in nursing. In 1949, she received her nurses license for the small fee of $5 and $27.75 for the test.

Betty loved her job and it showed. She spent over 65 years as an R.N. serving and caring for those who needed her. Over her career she worked with many local doctors and nurses. Many of her early years were spent working beside Dr. Tuhnen until his retirement. She met many of her patients just after birth and had the honor to care for them for decades. She worked and made lifelong friends at Rideout Hospital until she retired.

She was a member of the Catholic Ladies Relief Society at St. Joseph's in Marysville. She enjoyed her time she spent there with her friends.

While working, Betty was able to travel. She loved touring Europe and enjoyed her many cruises. Alaska was her favorite but she enjoyed the warmer weather cruises, too.

Baseball was her summer entertainment. She was a big fan of the SF Giants. She called to check in and express her opinion about their latest game.

Betty was dedicated to her family and instilled important values to each. She never stopped the loving, the concern, or the frequent calls checking on everyone.
