John Earl Sanger, of Marysville, CA, passed away on April 4, 2026, at 94.
John graduated from Clovis High School. He earned an Associate of Arts degree from Reedley College, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Fresno State College.
John worked for the U.S. Geological Survey as a surveyor after college, but was enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for two years as an engineer and surveyor before returning briefly to the U.S.G.S.
In 1956, John started working for the Division of Highways, now CalTrans, in Fresno, CA, where he met and married his wife, Dorothy.
John was promoted and transferred to the Division of Highways in Marysville, CA, in 1961.
He continued to work at CalTrans as a design and traffic engineer in Marysville, where he and his wife raised their three children. John retired from CalTrans in 1991, after 35 years of service.
After his wife had passed, John met his long-term companion, Claudia, as part of a widower's group.
John and Claudia enjoyed going on cruises and playing gin rummy and dominoes with friends and family.
In 2021, John and Claudia moved into a long-term care facility, where they spent their time taking care of each other, socializing with friends, and enjoying time with their family.
He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Sanger, of Oroville, CA; son, Michael Sanger, of Murfreesboro, TN; and his long-time companion, Claudia Nightingale, of Wheatland, CA; and her daughter, Janice Farrar of Wheatland, CA.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Sanger and Florence (Coberly) Sanger; wife, Dorothy (Taber) Sanger; sister, Martha (Sanger) Hawthorne; brother-in-law, John Hawthorne; and daughter, Judy Sanger.
There will be a viewing at Lipp and Sullivan on 629 D. Street in Marysville, CA, on May 8, 2026, from 2 PM to 7 PM.
Services will be held at 11 AM on May 9, 2026.
