Marian Theresa Owens, the last of a generation of a historic Californian, African-American pioneering family, died on December 22, 2022, at the age of 99.

Born on August 26, 1923, in Marysville, CA, she was the daughter of Josephine Burns Hatton, who was born in Marysville in 1862, and John Hatton, who was born in Napa County in 1867, but who spent most of his life in Marysville, dying in 1934, when Marion was only ten.

Marian was well known and respected in the community; known for her hard work, dignity, beauty, love of music and most of all, for her love of family. She created her own substantial history through her children, who are among the areas most loved musicians and members of the community.

Marian was predeceased by two sons, William Owens and Leslie Owens. She is survived by her children, Steve Owens, Kathleen Thompson, Ralph Owens, Nathan Owens, Richard Owens and Jerry Owens; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the much-loved matriarch of a large and close knit family and will be sorely missed.

Viewing will be Friday, January 13, 2023, from 2:00-7:00pm. Services will be Saturday, January 14, 2023, 12:30-2:00pm, at Lipp and Sullivan, 629 D St., Marysville.
