Mary Jean (Burke) Nehl, 92, long time Loma Rica resident died on March 11, 2013.

Born July 14, 1920 in Dell, Montana, her family moved to Santa Monica, California in 1926 where she graduated from the Academy of the Holy Names in 1938. She then completed nurses training at Denver General and joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1944 serving on the Hospital Train Unit stationed out of Fort Lewis, Washington.

Mary Jean married Walden Nehl in 1946 and they had six children. She loved to cook and entertain her friends and family. She was an avid reader, gardener and a loving mother. She would also periodically work as an RN at Camarillo State Hospital. Mary Jean and Wally moved to Loma Rica in 1969. They were members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Mary Jean belonged to the Friendly Hour Bridge Club, and volunteered at the thrift store run by St. Joseph's. They were active in the community with the Foothill Lions Club and Loma Rica Lioness Club.

Mary Jean is survived by her sons, Joseph and Peter Nehl; daughters, Liz Hayhoe and Jean Marie Akers; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; her brother David Burke and her sister Ann Butterfield.

Mary Jean was preceded in death by her husband Walden Nehl; sons, Michael and Frederick Nehl; her parents, Joseph David Burke and Rose Dowling Burke; and 7 brothers and sisters

Her family and friends are grateful for the loving care she received from the staff at Prestige Assisted Living in Oroville, Butte Home Health, and Hospice and Oroville Hospital Extended Care Unit.

Viewing will be at the Lipp and Sullivan Funeral Home, 629 D St., Marysville, CA, Thursday, March 14th 4pm to 7pm followed by a Rosary. Mary Jean's funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2013 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 7th and C Streets in Marysville. Immediately following the Mass there will be the burial at Peoria Cemetery in Browns Valley, followed by a reception at Foothill Lion's Club, 5667 Fruitland Road, Loma Rica, CA.
